Sacramento River and the Tower Bridge, Old Sacramento waterfront
The broad green waters of the Sacramento River ripple slowly past Old Sacramento and beyond the Tower Bridge. It was here, in Old Sacramento, thate the forty-niners arrived from San Francisco, and began their journeys to the El Dorado of the Sierra foothills.

We’re on our way to Washington’s Whidbey Island, and made it a point to have lunch on the sternwheeler Delta King, now docked permanently at the foot of J Street. The day was perfect: clear, sunny, in the mid-seventies. We sat outside, at the rail overlooking Old Man Sacramento, and the small craft going upstream and down.

As I did last time, I ordered the Kobe beef burger — wonderful and so ample I couldn’t finish it. Susie had a shrimp salad. With Susie’s wine (I’m the designated driver) it came to $37, before tipping. With that view, and at the rail on the deck of that delightful, historic boat, it was worth it. We’ve been there many times, and we’ll be back.

Here’s a view from our table, and then a mapquest showing you the Delta King’s location:The Delta King on the Sacramento River, Old Sacramento
